Disaster Prepping w/ Leadership Pasadena 2013

Sometimes I wonder if anyone is really reading my tweets and my blog. Then I find out that you not only read them both, but you are actually going to those events that I am talking about.  Thank you! I do it for you. I do it for Pasadena.  This next post is from my new friend Maria who read one of my tweets and decided to take in a disaster preparation class that I mentioned. Reading her post makes me feel like I should have attended too…Enjoy.

I have a confession:  I’ve never used a fire extinguisher. By Maria Rohmer

The embarrassing thing is it never concerned me.  Sure there was always one around, and sure, I knew where to find it.  But to pick one up and put out a fire where seconds could mean the difference between safety and destruction, life or death?  Nope.  I could picture myself in a fire situation fumbling with the tank, losing precious time and I didn’t want that on my conscience.  The older I got I disliked this fact more.  So when I found out about a fire and disaster preparedness training class thanks to Mr. Pasadena’s twitter I decided to do something about it.

My secret shame and I showed up to class at the senior center on Holly Street.  The training event was part of a day-long community fair hosted by Leadership Pasadena, a local and superbly run organization.  It was attended by members of our local fire department and EMT’s.  What resulted was an exchange of helpful and life-saving tips presented by some wonderful teachers sincere in their desire to impart their best advice from years of experience on the job.  It was a marvelous success.

Following an initial lecture jam packed with basic (and quite genius) information on ways to begin preparing for possible disaster, classes were split into three training groups.  Two groups went outside where one learned about shutting off water and gas lines during disasters.  I mean think about it – how many of us even know where to look for this stuff?  I didn’t and it just felt unacceptable.  These valves are right outside our homes and not impossible to access.  They are part of a pool of basic things we need to know to be safe and prepared.

The second group was instructed on how to safely move heavy objects (think felled tree trunks, walls or shelves).  Imagine a family member or neighbor getting pinned down and unable to move.  How do you safely set about releasing them?  Well, thanks to our firemen we learned how.  All it takes are a few solid wood blocks, a pry bar, steady hand and good partner (if available) and you can move 4000 lbs or more.  Believe it.  I saw the demonstration.

The division into smaller groups made for a casual and intimate feel.  Participants felt at ease asking questions from the mundane to the very serious.  We took notes, we shared information, and we laughed.  In spite of the heavy subject I was actually enjoying myself.

The last class was about (tah-dah!) understanding and using fire extinguishers.  I faintly remembered fire extinguishers came in different class types.  What I didn’t know is they come in 5 different ones: A-B-C-D and K (the newest one).  The letters are clearly marked on the appropriate extinguisher to alert users what kind of fire it can put out.  If the wrong kind is used on a particular type of fire then it won’t work and can potentially cause a worse fire.  A few minutes spent reading a pamphlet online or attending a similar class can make all the difference here.  The final part of this class included using a fire extinguisher to put out a mini-fire set up by our instructors.  The hands-on approach was meant to remove the intimidation factor.  It worked.

I learned operating a fire extinguisher is a simple process.  Too simple to be called a process, really.  It’s just a matter of following the PASS rule which I’d love to share with you:

Pull the safety pin locking the handle.

Aim the nozzle or hose from a safe distance.

Squeeze the grip handle.

Sweep out the fire with a back and forth “sweeping” motion.

And you’re done.  Easy peasy!  In fact everything we learned was simple.  After our three hour training course I walked out feeling enough confidence that if and when disaster strikes I’ll be part of those able to offer assistance.  I’ll have the advantage of information, and I definitely won’t be stuck fumbling with the fire extinguisher.  I’ll be part of those finding solutions while emergency crews are busy saving lives.

 About The Original Tops

The Original Tops, celebrating 60 years in business, is a restaurant steeped in history and tradition and a local symbol of the “American dream.”  Founded by a hard working immigrant from Greece, Steven Bicos, who sought out to provide good “family food,” this former old school coffee shop turned bustling walk-up window was one of the first pioneers to create the fast casual concept of true American dining.  Today, the restaurant, now owned by Steven’s sons John and Chris, still prides itself in making everything “from scratch,” using the freshest ingredients and staying true to the philosophy of homemade food at reasonable prices.

“They say you only turn 60 once. So my recommendation is to be there on Oct. 19th and or the 20th and order the Tops Special. It’s great at it’s regular price, but at 60 cents it is a special NOT TO BE MISSED.  Cheers to Tops on turning 60!” –Mr. Pasadena

Ginger Corner Market Opening July 7th!

In my quest to bring my local friends new, fun and interesting places to go to in Pasadena, I stumbled upon a diamond in the rough. Ginger Corner Market on Michigan Avenue (across from Grant Park) is on its way to be that local sandwich place/throwback convenience store/watering hole that has been missing in the Pasadena landscape.

The market once known as Eddie’s is the site of Ginger Corner Market.  Just throw out what you might have remembered Eddie’s  because I walked into Ginger and felt transported back into the simpler times of Pasadena.  From the counters, to the frozen treats cooler, to the dining area, it all felt rich, friendly, warm and full of the love that the owners bring to their establishment.  They held a soft opening a month ago, so it feels like they have been there for decades.

Jeff Hollingsworth and the crew prep for the lunch crowd.

Liz Hollingsworth (part of the family of owners) greeted me with a smile and handshake that was like a “welcome home” and if that wasn’t enough, my nose caught a whiff of some freshly baked cookies or muffins that made me want to sit down and order.  I indeed sat down to a savory tuna on sourdough that tasted like something grandma would make (I’m sure the roast beef, grilled vegetables and chicken salad taste the same).  Next, was their homemade pink lemonade with mint that will cool you off on a hot summer’s day and put some wind in your sails.

“baked cookies that made me want to sit down and order some.”

Then I was introduced to Jeff Hollingsworth (Liz’s brother and part owner) who was the designer and builder of all counters. I give him a lot of praise for his work because the counters add so much to the inviting, old school Pasadena feel.  You have to see it for yourself, this place special.  I am telling you about it and yet I want to keep it a secret because you might just want to make it your own private Pasadena spot.

Liz joined me at my table to let me know that the grand opening will be on July 7thand that they are celebrating from 10 am to 5pm with BBQ specials, popcorn and treats for the kids. I hope you will join me in welcoming Ginger Corner Market to Pasadena.

This order menu maybe temporary, but their food is everlasting goodness!

I think you are going to enjoy the great vibe that will keep you coming back for more.  Whether it’s the sandwiches, the freshly baked goods, the Golden Road beer, the Jones’ coffee (which I love) or that throwback good feeling you get when you enter the front door, Ginger Corner Market is your new best keep secret in Pasadena. Well it least it was until I wrote about it.

Americafest 2012! @ the Rose Bowl

86th Annual 4th of July celebration at the Rose Bowl.

There is nothing like fireworks on the Fourth of July and the Pasadena Rose Bowl seems to do them better than most each and every year.  The Fireworks Spectacular at the Rose Bowl is better known as Americafest and from the family fun in the early afternoon (entertainment, crafts, exhibits and inflatable rides) to the motorcycle jumping, the Drum Corps , flyover and 30-minute pyrotechnic show (that is choreographed and produced by Pyrospectaculars) there is no hotter ticket in Sothern California. So mark your calendar and plan on being in Pasadena on the 4th of July. Because Pasadena & Americafest are going to light up the night sky this coming Wednesday night. .

Attached is a schedule, how to get tickets and a note about parking fees (see below).

Locals note:

Then again if you are not into all the flair, you can hang with all the locals on the Colorado Street Bridge.  It’s no secret anymore, people from all over southern California come and park at the Pasadena Elks lodge and then walk to bridge to watch the fireworks. This local site provides an awesome view of the fireworks and it is easier to  leave the Pasadena area once the fireworks are over. Try to get there by 8ish. The bridge and the Elks Lodge fill up quickly.

Mr. Pasadena says:  For me – I love Americafest by day and I love to watch the fireworks from the bridge at night. Join me at Americafest and stay to watch the fireworks at the Rose Bowl or join me on the bridge. Either way I know you will have a grand time.

KENJI in the house!

Kenji: rising next gen comedian.

There is nothing more fun than going to a comedy club and getting to laugh out loud. The Ice House in Pasadena has been the home for the legends of comedy.  Legends like Jay Leno, George Carlin, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld,  Ellen Degeneres and Robin Williams have all graced the stage at the ice house and left them all laughing.  It’s also been a great place to catch a rising star comedian and this Saturday is no exception.  This Saturday night Kenji will be performing on stage 2 at 10:30pm.

I have seen many a many a funny comedian at the Ice House, but Kenji seems to be that comedian that may someday soon find his place amongst the uber comedians. If I had to say what he kind of funny he is ,I would say that he is  very much like a Richard Pryor in the 70’s  and Eddie Murphy back in the early 80’s, with a today spin on things. His entire set is all based on the world according to Kenji and no subject matter is taboo.  If you are in Pasadena this Saturday night, Kenji is a MUST SEE. I’ll say it again Kenji is a MUST SEE!  He just has that “IT” factor.  Once you see him you’ll know that you will see him in movies and on TV soon.

Place: Ice House 24 North Mentor Ave.
